Unfortunately, input data could be unstructured. For example, often we need to leverage Optical Character Recognition technology to understand the content. Some RPA tools like UiPath, have built-in integration with external services like Google to convert a scanned document into text.
Besides mentioned OCR technology, overall computer vision is trendy now. For example, you can use machine learning to understand what is in the picture. Usually, it is a result of a big number of training sessions with a large amount of positive and negative pictures to build a model. Computer vision, speech-to-text and other categories of machine learning can be applied to RPA project to structure input data.
Sometimes "if-then" algorithms are not enough for effective work of software robot. It has to understand natural language, context and make an optimal decision in situations with limited knowledge. This is a huge area of a partnership between artificial intelligence and RPA tools. Such Cognitive Automation approach is still in early stages of development. Still, there is no universal tool available on the market which is able to implement such functionality "out-of-the-box". However, IT companies like IBM Watson try to do it in partnership with RPA software vendors.
